“Closer” (featuring Halsey) by The Chainsmokers Has Now Gone Platinum 12 Times OverTimes

“We ain’t ever gettin’ older” is undoubtedly the most well-known lyric from “Closer” (featuring Halsey), the hit single by The Chainsmokers. With sales continuing strong nearly 4 years after being released, the track is definitely not getting too old for fans. Truth be told, the song has been bought and played so many times over those years that the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has officially certified it as 12-times Platinum.

The Chainsmokers (Drew Taggart and Alex Pall) may have been onto something when they, along with Halsey (Ashley Frangipane), wrote “Closer.” It is one of only 5 songs that have been certified 12-times Platinum, which include “Baby” by Justin Bieber and Ludacris, “Love the Way You Lie” by Eminem and Rihanna, and “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. Only one song has gone further, “Despacity” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, which is certified as 13-time Platinum, making it the most certified song in all of history.

Certifications are determined by actual sales, but with digital streaming now so prevalent, they’ve come up with a process that determines an equivalency between number of sales and streams, which they factor in. So, although 10 million copies of “Closer” have not actually been sold, the track has surpassed the threshold with the equivalent number of streams.
